How many square meters is a plot measured in tsubo? How many milliliters is the "2 go" of rice in a recipe? How long is a shaku ruler in centimeters? In Japanese real estate, traditional rooms, sake, kimono, fishing, and antiques, the shakkanho units are still very much alive, and converting them to metric is a recurring chore. This Japanese units converter lets you pick a family — length, area, volume, or weight — enter a single value, choose its input unit, and instantly see every unit in that family side by side, both traditional (tsubo, tatami, tan, se; shaku, sun, ken, jo, ri; go, sho, to, koku, shaku; monme, kan, kin) and metric (m, cm, ㎡, L, ml, g, kg). The conversion factors use the exact ratios defined by Japan's Measurement Act (1 shaku = 10/33 meter, 1 tsubo = 400/121 square meter, 1 sho = 2401/1331 liter, 1 monme = 3.75 gram) internally, rounding only for display, so tsubo⇄㎡, go⇄sho, shaku⇄cm, and monme⇄g all stay accurate. Tatami sizes vary by region (Kyoto, Chukyo, Edo, and apartment sizes), but this tool uses the official shakkanho conversion of 1 tatami = 1/2 tsubo. Click any converted value to copy the plain number without grouping, ready to paste into a spreadsheet or document. The number you enter is never sent to any server; everything is computed entirely inside your browser.

How to use

  1. Choose the family you want to convert: length, area, volume, or weight.
  2. Enter a value and pick its unit. For example, in area type "3" and set the input unit to tsubo.
  3. Every unit in the same family appears at once. Click any value to copy the plain number.

FAQ

Is the number I enter sent to a server?

No. The whole conversion runs inside your browser; the number you enter is never uploaded, stored, or transmitted. It works fully locally.

How many square meters is one tsubo?

One tsubo is about 3.305785 square meters (exactly 400/121 ㎡); conversely one square meter is about 0.3025 tsubo. This tool uses the exact ratio defined by the Measurement Act and rounds only for display, so converting tsubo⇄㎡ back and forth stays consistent. One tsubo also equals two tatami.

I've heard tatami sizes differ by region — which one is used?

Yes — actual tatami mats differ in size between the Kyoto, Chukyo, Edo, and apartment standards. This tool uses the official shakkanho conversion of 1 tatami = 1/2 tsubo (about 1.6529 ㎡). If you need the physical dimensions, check the tatami standard for your specific region.

How many milliliters is one go of rice?

One go is about 180.39 ml (a tenth of a sho); a single rice-cooker measuring cup is roughly one go. One sho = 10 go ≈ 1.8 liters, one to = 10 sho ≈ 18 liters, and one koku = 100 sho ≈ 180 liters.

Is the kin here the same as a loaf of bread?

No, they are different. The kin in this tool is the shakkanho weight unit, where 1 kin = 160 monme = 600 grams. The "1 kin" loaf of bread follows a separate packaged-bread trade convention of at least 340 grams (usually around 340–400 grams). For weight conversion this tool uses the shakkanho 600 grams.
